South Asian Avant-Garde (SAAG) and South Asia Studies Council at Yale are hosting the acclaimed novelist and musician Amit Chaudhuri to discuss his first three novels, A Strange and Sublime Address, Afternoon Raag, and Freedom Song, all of which are being reissued this May by NYRB Classics.
Amit Chaudhuri will be joined in conversation by Kamil Ahsan, associate editor and founder of SAAG and a doctoral student in the History of Science and Medicine (HSHM).
These early Chaudhuri novels follow characters synthesized, to varying degrees, from Chaudhuri’s own experiences growing up between Calcutta and Bombay, and later studying in London and Oxford, suspended between multiple tethers, some unraveling and some still materializing, to homes old and new. “Nothing is too small or boring,” Jonathan Coe writes of Chaudhuri in the London Review of Books, “he defamiliarizes the everyday, reinvigorates the ordinary, and makes the humdrum exciting.”
The discussion will be held in the Humanities Quadrangle building, Room L01 on the lower concourse. It will be followed by a Q&A and book signing. Please RSVP for the event.
