During the first half of the second millennium A.D., changing Indian Ocean networks drew together more tightly the locations we now know as Sri Lanka, Burma, and Thailand. Buddhist texts and persons traveled these sea lanes, informing the style and strategies of kings in Mon, Burmese, and Tai territories. In these processes, Lankans, and the idea of Laá¹ kÄ, played a distinctive role. This seminar explores the place of Laá¹ kÄ in Tai, Mon, and Burmese political practice during the 14th and 15th centuries.
